More and more we hear about organic farming and the benefits... but what makes food or wine "organic"?

The USDA definition for organic food is as follows: "...produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conversation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations.

Organic food is produced without using most conventional pesticides; petroleum-based fertilizers or sewage sludge-based fertilizers; bio-engineering; or ionizing radiation. Before a product can be labeled 'organic', a Government-approved certifier inspects the farm where the food is grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules necessary to meet USDA organic standards."

As for wine, there are different classifications of organic methods used:

  • 100% Organic - Refers to wines that are produced with grapes that are certified 100% organically grown and do not have any added sulfites.
  • Organic - Refers to wines that have at least 95% of their ingredients from certified organic sources. These wines may have an additional 100 ppm of sulfur dioxide added to them.
  • Made with Organic Grapes - Refers to wines that have at least 70% of their grapes from organic sources. These wines may have sulfur dioxide added as well.

2002 Bonterra Cabernet Sauvignon (North Coast, California) $14.99

The certified organic Bonterra Ranch, in the Russian River benchlands of Mendocino, is perhaps the finest expression of their philosophy−respect for the land will result in exceptional wines. Not surprisingly, it is also one of the premier examples of organic viticulture in the world.

Bontera Cab: "Forward black cherry and plum aromas fill out the nose with hints of chocolate and spice. The wine offers a nice, full mouth with elegant blackberry flavors, ripe tannins, and a lingering finish."

2003 Frey Cabernet Sauvignon (California) $14.99

Their vineyards and winery are nestled on the slopes of the Redwood Valley A.V.A. (American Viticultural Area) in Mendocino County, California, at the headwaters of the Russian River.

Frey's Cabernet Sauvignon is described as a gracefully balanced wine with black-cherry and plum flavors, good depth, dark ruby color and a hint of eucalyptus on the finish. The grapes were harvested in October 2003. The wine is aged on French oak. Fine chocolate and grilled foods complement this classic wine.

2003 Bonterra Chardonnay (Mendocino, California) $11.99

Forward green apple, lemon-citrus and creme brulee aromas precede bright, fully realized flavors of cinnamon-apple, ripe pear and toasty-oak vanilla. Creamy texture and finely balanced acidity add weight and lingering freshness to the palate.

88 Points: "You won't get much more than citrus, maybe green apple, in the fruit department, but the wine is so well structured and clean, it creates interest. Oak and lees are prominent but not overwhelming."  -- The Wine Enthusiast

#1 out of the "10 Best Value Chardonnay of the Year"!  "Forward scents of spicy green apple and succulent, ripe pear. Mouth filling with loads of flavor that replicate the nose. A generous, well-proportioned Mendocino Chardonnay with silky texture and crisp acidity."  -- The Wine News

2003 Girasole Chardonnay (Mendocino, California) $12.99

Girasole Vineyards, Organically Grown Grapes, "Pure Mendocino": Charlie Barra planted the home ranch, Redwood Valley Vineyards, in 1955, and has farmed approximately 150 acres of varietal wine grapes ever since. The other 25 acres of the 175-acre vineyard, sitting on the benchlands above the headwaters of the Russian River in Mendocino County, is taken up by five ponds, open space for wildlife and pasture for smaller animals, like Navajo Churro sheep. All water used for irrigation and frost protection is from winter run-off from the pristine watersheds that surround the vineyards.

Girasole 2003 Chardonnay is made from 45-year-old Wente clone vines which yield smaller berries and shorter bunches. Stainless steel fermentation leaves this wine clean, crisp and full on the finish. Imagine the enjoyment this wine will bring to quench your thirst on a warm summer's day.

2003 Lurton Terra Sana Vin de Pays Charentais (France) $9.99

Review of 2001 vintage:  "This is a clear, pale straw-color wine, loaded with ripe, appealing pear and starfruit aromas. Very full and ripe in flavor, the first taste almost seems sweet, but bright and snappy citric lemon-lime brings it into balance on the palate. Quenching, good with food, another white wine to be drunk up while it's young and fresh.

FOOD MATCH: A good cross-cultural match with bratwurst and sauerkraut and potato pancakes.

WHEN TO DRINK: Best when fresh: Enjoy it this year...."

  Sincerity Merlot-Cabernet (Chile) $15.99

"Consultant supreme Alvaro Espinoza has made a winner in this organic blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet. The nose is nicely roasted, with big, creamy fruit and strong chocolate notes. The palate is thick and balanced, with smooth flavors of black fruit and milk chocolate. All told, it's meaty and huge, but not overdone and the tannins are pure velvet." -- 91 Points, Wine Enthusiast

"The second vintage of Sincerity is tight and firm. Under the dark mineral scent of schist, you can pick out the flavor of sweet black berries and strawberry jam, while the tannins keep the tension with their muscular texture. . . . a delicious red Alvaro Espinoza crafted at Santa Emiliana's biodynamic vineyard in Los Robles Estate, in the northern hillsides of Colchagua Valley."

Winemaker's Notes: Deep red in color, the wine has an intense berry and black-fruit aroma, with some coconut and vanilla notes as well.
